Charity helps patients and relatives
A wish has come true for a ward at Scunthorpe hospital thanks to the Health Tree Foundation (HTF) charity.
The HTF, which is the official charity of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, has donated dementia clocks, dementia toilet seats and a reclining chair to enable a family member to stay with a loved one at a difficult time on ward 24.
When visiting hospital, dementia patients can become very unsettled and agitated. Helping to create a calming environment for them is essential and making small changes can make a big difference.
The specialist clocks will help dementia sufferers keep track of time, and know what day of the week it is.
Together with the clocks, new coloured toilet seats have been fitted to the toilets to help patients’ better use the facilities.
Ward 24 manager Garry Cowling said: “We’re delighted to have dementia friendly clocks in each bay and side room. They have been a huge help to our patients as they help them to keep track of the time and days while they are in hospital.”
Gary added “We also have a recliner chair, which helps patients’ relatives spend the night, or just get a few hours’ sleep. The chair is also proving popular with patients, especially those who struggle to get in and out of ordinary chairs. It is really important for us to be able to make our dementia patients as comfortable as possible while they are staying with us.”
Scunthorpe HTF community champion Hayley Thompson said: “Things like the clocks and reclining chairs are exactly the kind of thing we love to fund, as it is often the small things that can make a big difference.
“Many of the staff are currently fundraising themselves in order to pay for some of these items and they still have more they would like to do. Next they would like to refurbish the day room and purchase a new dining table for patients. If anyone would like to support ward 24 with their fundraising we would love to hear from you.”
