Patients to benefit from £200,000 state-of-the-art equipment
Patients at Grimsby and Scunthorpe hospitals needing keyhole surgical procedures can now benefit from new state-of-the-art equipment. It’s thanks to a fundraising appeal launched by nurses at the hospitals, which has raised £200,000.
The money raised over the last two years for the Health Tree Foundation’s Rear into Gear appeal means Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG) has been able to purchase two HD laparoscopic camera systems. This will enable consultants to perform laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical procedures on patients with bowel cancer and those needing similar types of surgery.
The new equipment will enhance the Trust’s ability to perform more complex surgeries and provide greater benefits for patients.
Patients can expect quicker recovery times and reduced scarring following their operation due to the equipment allowing for a less invasive procedure. Better picture definition means shorter theatre times meaning more patients can be operated on. It’s estimated that more than one thousand patients will benefit from this new equipment over the next five years.
Stan Wood, theatre manager at Grimsby, said: “The Rear into Gear appeal was set up two years ago and the fundraising was carried out by our colorectal clinical nurse specialist team. Having HD imagery significantly improves the surgeon’s field of vision and ensures precise surgical outcomes.”
Louise Salt, clinical nurse specialist in colorectal, said: “We needed this new equipment as we are now doing more complex surgeries. The colorectal team raised money from afternoon teas, lots of donations, raffles and tea parties. So many people took up the cause and donated, so a big thank you to everyone who did. The generosity and the pride of local people in supporting the hospital never ceases to amaze and we are lucky that they always meet the challenge of supporting in any way they can.”
Clare Woodard, charity manager, said: “Thank you to everyone who donated and supported the appeal. Without amazing fundraisers and supporters, this would not be possible. The Health Tree Foundation work closely with our clinical teams to ensure donations are used effectively, making a huge difference to the patients who need it most.”
