Cleethorpes charity fundraisers crowned champions

The Cleethorpes Cancer Support Group has been awarded a special accolade in celebration of their years of fundraising for the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.

The group, which has raised more than £100,000 for cancer services at the hospital in the last year alone, was named as the Chairman’s Charity Champion at the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust Our Stars evening.

David and Lynn Wedlake attended the Our Stars 2016 ceremony at Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort on behalf of the group.

Chairman of the charity David Wedlake said: “It’s a sheer pleasure to be recognised and we’re absolutely delighted to win, especially in the light of the other strong contenders.

“This comes at a time when Lynn, one of our charity`s most dynamic, hardworking Trustees is taking a long deserved retirement after 35 years as an unpaid charity shop manager and secretary so it was doubly pleasing that she was able to receive the award on behalf of the group.”

Lynn added: “I’ve not survived cancer because I’m brave. I’ve survived it because I’ve had great treatment.”

The award was presented by the former Trust Chairman Dr Jim Whittingham whose tenure ended in September.

Nine other awards were presented on the evening including one picked by patients.

You can view the winners on the Trust website at http://www.nlg.nhs.uk/about/awards/

A raffle on the night also raised £1,600 for the Health Tree Foundation. The money will be spent on specialist equipment to make going into surgery less frightening for children. Projectors are to be purchased for the anaesthetic rooms to project child friendly images around the room to de-stress them ahead of their operation.
