Family donate monitors to help end of life patients

A local family has made a generous donation to help people keep their loved ones at home when they are at the end of their life.

Marie Hewson knows firsthand the heartache of caring for someone as she looked after her husband Jeffrey who sadly died from cancer on May 8 this year.

She received help from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust’s community end of life team. They provide invaluable support to people caring for loved ones at home.

Marie and her family wanted to give something back and help other families so decided to raise money to provide vital baby monitors. These are used by families to provide peace of mind allowing them to carry on normal daily routines, while listening out for their loved one.

Tara Given from the end of life team said: “We provide the monitors to families as it gives them that reassurance that their loved one is ok while they go about their daily routines, such as putting the washing out. They can hear if they are needed and they don’t feel as if they have to sit at the bedside all day.”

Marie said: “I know how much having the monitors helped us a family while Jeffrey was at home. I wanted to say thank you to the team for their amazing support and help other families who also have a loved one at the end of their life at home.

“It meant the world to us having Jeffrey at home surrounded by his family in his own environment. The monitors allowed us to sit outside and move around the house knowing we were still able to keep an eye on him and hear him.”

Marie added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the nurses who helped my husband, I am truly grateful for everything they did.”

The donation was made through the Trust’s official charity, The Health Tree Foundation, which supports people in raising money for their local hospitals and community services.
