Best friends set to take on Euro city cycling challenge

Two best friends are in training for the bike ride of a lifetime as they aim to complete a grueling 280-mile route from London to Brussels.

Ian Stoney and David Morley have set their sights on raising money for Scunthorpe hospital’s official charity, The Health Tree Foundation. Money raised will be split between supporting Oesophageal cancer patients and the Maternity Bereavement Suite appeal.

The daring duo decided to raise money for charity after Ian was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in January 2016. He underwent an eight hour operation in March to remove part of his oesophagus.

Ian said: “I decided I wanted to give something back to the hospital for the amazing treatment I received from Mr Gough and his team.”

David volunteered to be involved in the charity ride to support Ian and because members of his family have been affected by cancer in the past too. They decided to split the funds as Ian’s wife Jane is the ward sister of the central delivery suite, which is where the bereavement suite will be located.

David has also previously completed a charity cycle ride in Vietnam & Cambodia.

Ian added: “I started biking about nine years ago. I started off on a mountain bike and progressed up to road cycling. I am now ready for a challenge and am looking forward to giving something back to the hospital which treated me.”

David said: “Ian and I have been friends since sixth form. We have been very competitive over the years and he introduced me to cycling as a way of getting fitter. We are both now in training for the Euro challenge as it will be very challenging.”

The cycle ride leaves London on August 30 and will take four days as they pedal through the Hook of Holland, Amsterdam, Breda and Brussels.

The Health Tree Foundation community champion Hayley Thompson said: “It is so wonderful to have two best friends raise money for their local hospital.
