Lions celebrate 10 years of delivering “roartastic” lions

Hundreds of children across North Lincolnshire continue to benefit from a cuddly toy generously donated by the local Lions Clubs, part of a worldwide organisation with 1.4 million members.

Over the last decade, young patients at Scunthorpe hospital’s emergency centre (A&E) and Disney ward have been given a ‘bravery lion’ to help bring a smile to their faces.

The lions have been donated over the last decade thanks to the local Lions Clubs of Barton, Brigg, Glanford & Lindsey, Isle of Axholme, Scunthorpe and Winterton and the districts they represent.

The six clubs each take it in turn to deliver the soft toys throughout the year and have handed over around a massive 6,000 lions to the hospital since the scheme started.

Disney ward deputy manager Vikki Mcalpine said: “We really appreciate the kind donation from the Lions clubs every month. The children’s faces light up when they receive the soft toys.”

Presidents of the local groups recently gathered at the hospital to mark the marvellous milestone.

The Lions Club Presidents said: “Ten years ago local members came up with the idea to give cuddly soft toy lions to the hospital. They were seen as ‘bravery lions’ given to children to provide a distraction during a traumatic time.

“They proved to be very successful and we are pleased to have been able to continue giving ‘bravery lions’ every year since.

“This year will see the clubs deliver another 600 cuddly toy lions all made possible by the kind donations given to the clubs from the public and businesses of North Lincolnshire. We thank them for their help as we know the good that these toy lions give to the children of the local community.”
