Neonatal ninjas are pulling on their running gear for charity

Four fundraisers are training for a half marathon to help refurbish part of the neonatal intensive care unit at Scunthorpe hospital.

The NICU ninjas are calling on local people to back their efforts and sponsor them when they take part in the North Lincs half marathon on May 5.

Advanced healthcare assistant, and keen fitness enthusiast, Sue Couch encouraged her colleagues Gina Chrost, Lisa Danoris and Janine Swift to start running last year.

She said: “To begin with they all struggled to run a mile. With a little bit of determination and hard work they are taking on their first half marathon which is fantastic.”

With every mile they cover they hope to raise funds for the hospital’s official charity, The Health Tree Foundation (HTF).

Sue, who completed an Ironman challenge in 2018, is helping her colleagues with their training schedules.  She said: “To be able to help raise funds to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for our babies and parents means the world to us.”

The HTF splashed out last year and refurbished half of the unit; in 2019 it hopes to complete the rest.

HTF community champion Hayley Thompson said: “It would be fantastic if we could raise enough money this year to complete the refurbishment on the unit. I want to say a big thank you to our four staff members who have set their sights on raising money for us.”
