£200,000 appeal launched in aid of bowel cancer patients

The Health Tree Foundation, the official charity of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, has launched the ‘Rear into Gear’ appeal.

The £200,000 will be used to buy two sets of state-of-the-art keyhole surgery equipment which will be used for patients with bowel conditions, including cancer, at both Scunthorpe and Grimsby hospitals.

The equipment will enable surgeons to perform the latest and most complex keyhole surgery procedures for patients undergoing bowel cancer and bowel related illnesses such as colitis, irritable bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Mr Kishore Kumar Sasapu, consultant colorectal surgeon and clinical lead for general surgery, said: “We have come a long way with bowel cancer related laparoscopic surgery. The new equipment will enhance our abilities to do even better surgery and provide more benefits for our patients.”

The Rear into Gear appeal replaces what was the Bottoms up Appeal which was launched in Grimsby in 2009 and raised more than £150,000. That appeal has now folded, and the new one, which will cover Scunthorpe and Grimsby, has been launched.

Louise Salt, colorectal specialist nurse, said: “Local people have always been so generous with the Bottoms up Appeal, so we are hoping everyone will back Rear into Gear and come up trumps with fundraising.

“It could be a sponsored bike ride, head shave, or a raffle. Any donation, large or small, will be gratefully received. The colorectal teams at the hospitals will also be arranging fundraising events for people to come along to as well.”

Victoria Winterton, charity manager for the hospital’s official charity, The Health Tree Foundation, said: “We are very excited to be launching the Rear into Gear appeal. It is going to be one of our main fundraisers for the next year.”

The Cleethorpes Sea View cancer charity shop has already pledged its support with a cheque for £15,000 and any money raised at the shop going towards the appeal.

Prue Stillings, a volunteer at the shop, said: “A lot of hard work will come from our volunteers to help with this fundraising. We like to set ourselves a goal and being able to say we have helped local people so we are delighted to be able to back this appeal.”
