Supermarket staff lace up their boots for charity football match

Staff from Tesco Extra Scunthorpe ditched the checkouts and laced up their football boots to take part in a charity football match which saw more than £600 raised for a local hospital appeal.

Calling themselves the Tesco Tigers and Scrubs FC, both teams were made up of supermarket staff and local Sunday league teams. They went head to head at Glanford Park to raise funds for Scunthorpe hospital’s maternity bereavement suite appeal.

Tesco fresh food manager Shane Broughton knows all too well the importance of having a specialised suite for parents who sadly lose their babies. Shane and his partner lost their little girl Lacey-Mai in May 2010. Shane wanted to help raise awareness of the appeal so helped the charity create an appeal video and organise an event to help bring communities together.

Hayley Thompson, the community champion for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust’s official charity, The Health Tree Foundation (HTF) has been working closely with Shane and Tesco on the appeal.

The appeal, which has been launched by the HTF, needs to raise £150,000 to create a suite for parents to spend time together with their babies after they have passed away. The suite will provide a safe haven for families.

Shane said: “It was a fantastic day. The support from the community was amazing. To play on Scunthorpe United’s football pitch was a great experience for everyone involved.”

A minute silence was held at the beginning of the match in memory of Lacey-Mai and all the babies who are born sleeping at Scunthorpe hospital.

Refreshments were kindly provided by Hepys Hog Roast which helped towards raising funds, alongside a raffle.

Shane added: “I would like to thank everyone who was involved with the day and for helping raise such a great amount for the appeal. I know that the room will make such a difference to families who will need to use that service.”

Hayley added: “We would like to thank everyone who took part in the charity football match: the players, referee, photographers and to all our supporters who made the day a huge success. It is thanks to Shane and other parents sharing their stories that we are becoming one step closer to our £150,000 appeal target.”
